Description

When Charles brings home a short-haired black-and-tan dachshund named Ziggy from a dog show, the Peterson family known for fostering puppies welcome the energetic pup into their home. Ziggy's curiosity soon gets the better of him, and he digs a hole under the backyard fence, escaping into the neighborhood. With their reputation for finding perfect homes for every puppy at stake, the Petersons must quickly locate the missing dog before he runs into danger.

Quick Summary

For kids who are nuts about puppies and love a story that feels like a tiny adventure, Ziggy is a quick, heart-warming read that hits the sweet spot between funny and gentle. The plot follows a foster family that brings home a high-energy dachshund pup who immediately starts digging his way out of the backyard, and the ensuing search is both tense enough to keep pages turning and sweet enough to warm a parent's heart. It's a great choice for reluctant readers because the chapters are short, the language is straightforward, and there are enough laughs like Ziggy's goofy escape attempts to keep even the most hesitant reader hooked. The book also subtly teaches responsibility and empathy for animals without being preachy, making it a nice pick for a family read-aloud. If your child liked the boy-and-his-dog charm of Henry and Mudge, they'll find a similar cozy, funny vibe here, and since it's part of a series, there are plenty more Ziggy adventures waiting after this one.
