Quick Summary
If you loved the first Iron Fey books but always wondered what was going on in Ash's head, this one's for you. The last prince of the Winter Court finally gets to tell his side of the story, and it's a wild ride as he journeys through dangerous faery lands to find a way to become human. What really makes this stand out is Ash's sharp wit and dry humor cutting through all the serious magical stuff he's the kind of character who's sarcastic even when facing death, which keeps things entertaining even when stakes are high. Fans of dark fantasy with actual heart will appreciate the romance, but it's not sappy; it's more about what someone would sacrifice for the person they care about. Parents should know there's some intense moments with violence and emotional stakes, but nothing gratuitous it's the kind of intense that makes you turn the page. Kids who like snarky, complicated characters and stories about finding themselves (literally, in this case) will gravitate toward this. If you've been reading the whole series, this feels like the satisfying payoff for sticking with it, though it works as a standalone if you're into faery mythology.
