Description

Arnold Schlemp is excited to get the basketball shoes he saw on TV for his birthday, but the shoes turn out to be a nightmare they give him painful blisters and, worse still, the kid from the commercial appears at his doorstep. Arnold must figure out how to deal with both the malfunctioning shoes and this unwelcome visitor in this funny middle-grade tale about the gap between advertising hype and real life.

Quick Summary

If you've ever wanted something because it looked amazing on TV only to be totally let down, this book will feel painfully familiar. Arnold Schlemp falls for those infomercial-style ads that promise you'll be a total superstar with the magic product, but of course reality doesn't match the hype and that's where the hilarious chaos begins. The humor is perfect for kids who like their jokes a little absurd, and at a 3.2 reading level it's accessible for younger middle graders without feeling babyish. There's a good message hiding underneath all the silliness about not falling for advertising tricks and being happy with what you've got, but it never feels preachy. Fans of books like "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" or other comedic school stories will probably eat this up. Parents will appreciate that it's lighthearted fun with a genuine lesson tucked inside, making it a solid choice for kids who need a book that won't feel like homework.
