Description

While Dig looks for beachmoles, Ploo plants a little bellvine from the junglywood outside his front door. He wants to hear the tinking of its bells in the breeze. But when the bellvine starts to grow, it causes problems that Ploo never expected.

Quick Summary

Mick Inkpen has a way of making the simplest stories feel genuinely fun, and this one is no exception. Kids will love following Dig and Ploo as they chase two completely different adventures one character is on a quest to spot elusive beachmoles, while the other plants a tiny seed that spirals into hilariously chaotic proportions. The humor comes from how Ploo's sweet little bellvine grows and grows until it takes over everything, which is the kind of relatable problem kids find hilarious (who hasn't accidentally grown something out of control?). At just 1,240 words with an AR level of 3.5, it's a solid choice for early readers who are building confidence, but the short sentences and expressive storytelling also make it a great read-aloud for kindergarteners and first graders. Parents will appreciate that it captures that classic Inkpen charm warm, gentle, and quietly funny without being preachy about nature or responsibility. If your kid enjoys this, they'd probably also like Inkpen's "Kipper" books or anything by Julia Donaldson, since they share that same playful energy and satisfying story structure.
