Description

After a fire destroys his family, twelve-year-old Alfredo is taken by his enigmatic Uncle Giorgio to the ancestral home beneath a volcano, where he learns that his uncle can control the mountain's fiery forces and transmute the tears of a salamander into gold. Alfredo discovers he is the heir to this ancient power, destined to become the Master of the Mountain, but as he uncovers his family's dark history he begins to suspect his uncle is more sorcerer than savior. Now he must decide whether to embrace his inherited role or resist his uncle's sinister plans.

Quick Summary

Imagine a boy who can sing beautiful church hymns one moment and then find himself tangled in the fiery secrets of a live volcano the next that's what happens to Alfredo in Peter Dickinson's The Tears of the Salamander. The story blends 18th-century Italian life with a fantastical twist, giving readers a vivid sense of the period while keeping the tension high as Alfredo uncovers his uncle's dark sorcery. It's a great pick for kids who love a mix of adventure, a hint of danger, and a dash of mystery, especially those who enjoyed the clever puzzles and quick pacing of The Mysterious Benedict Society. Parents will appreciate that the scary parts are more about suspense and imagination than graphic violence, and the book even throws in a bit of volcanic science along the way. As Alfredo tries to outwit his uncle and protect the people he cares about, he learns about loyalty, bravery, and the true meaning of family all while the story crackles with the heat of Mt. Etna.
