Description

Jack is in trouble. Not only is he in hospital (again!) but he knows that the police are coming for him. They want to know about the accident- the tomato-related accident...

Quick Summary

Jeremy Strong, the same guy who brought us "My Brother's Got a Bullet in His Head" and other wildly funny middle-grade adventures, turns his attention to something truly terrifying: tomatoes. Yeah, you read that right. Jack keeps waking up in the hospital after bizarre "tomato-related accidents," and the police are starting to ask questions. The setup is ridiculous in the best way this book leans hard into the absurdity of an ordinary kid whose life keeps getting upended by giant, angry vegetables, and the humor is exactly the kind of goofy, gross stuff that makes kids laugh out loud. It's fast-paced and easy to read (AR 3.9), which makes it perfect for reluctant readers or kids who want something light and fun without a ton of commitment. That said, there's also some genuine heart here; Jack's dealing with real stuff like feeling misunderstood and worried about what people think of him, so it doesn't feel like just pure silliness. Parents will appreciate that it's age-appropriate and wholesome despite the chaotic premise, and kids will love the over-the-top action sequences and the way Strong makes everyday vegetables feel genuinely menacing. If your kid liked "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" or "Captain Underpants," they'll probably eat this up it's got that same irreverent, anything-goes energy.
