Description

When Bartlett and his friend Jacques le Grand are captured in the fiery underground City of Flames, the only way they can earn their release is to find the one thing the city's inhabitants crave most an impossible treasure. Their quest forces them to outwit the ruling Pasha, who believes the boys' young friend Gozo is his stolen son, and to navigate a realm of riddles, traps, and blazing heat. In the end, Bartlett must use ingenuity and perseverance to rescue his friends and return them safely home.

Quick Summary

If your kid likes adventure stories with a fantasy twist, this one's a fun pick. Bartlett gets stuck in an underground kingdom called the City of Flames with a friend, and the only way out is to go on a quest for something everyone in that mysterious place desperately wants which makes for some clever and surprising moments as they figure out what that actually means. The humor keeps things light even when things get tense, so it works well for readers who like a little excitement but don't want anything too scary. It's got that satisfying middle-grade vibe where the characters have to think their way out of trouble rather than just relying on luck. I'd compare it to something like a shorter, more playful version of "The Phantom Tollbooth" same sense of cleverness and wordplay, but with a faster pace that keeps younger middle-graders turning pages. Parents will appreciate that it's a quick read at around 37,000 words, so even reluctant readers can finish it without getting bogged down, and there's enough heart underneath the adventure to make it memorable.
