Description

Libby finds comfort in God's love as she faces the dangers of trying to help a fugitive slave escape to freedom through the Underground Railroad.

Quick Summary

If your kid is into historical fiction especially stories about courage and doing the right thing this one is a solid pick. Libby, the main character, isn't some fearless superhero; she's a regular girl who gets caught up in helping a fugitive slave escape via the Underground Railroad, and what makes it stick with you is watching her wrestle with being scared but doing the brave thing anyway. It's set during a really tense period in history, so there's some real danger on the page (nothing graphic, but enough to keep kids on their toes), and the faith element comes through naturally as part of how Libby copes rather than feeling preachy. At its heart it's a friendship story too Libby's relationship with her friend Teresa drives a lot of the heart, and there are moments that feel genuinely touching without going over the top. I'd say it's perfect for kids in grades 4 through 7 who like stories like *Number the Stars* or *The Westing Game* mystery, stakes, and characters you root for. It's not a light read, but it's the kind of book that sticks around after you close it.
