Description

Set in medieval West Africa, the tale follows Sunjata, a young boy marked by prophecy to become a warrior king, as he searches for the strength and courage to claim his birthright. He must outwit a scheming rival queen and confront the sorcery of the tyrannical Sumanguru, who will do anything to stop his rise. Through battles and trials, Sunjata learns perseverance and leadership to unite his people.

Quick Summary

If your kid is into stories about underdogs who grow up to be heroes, Sunjata is basically the West African answer to those tales a real kid from the Mali Empire who everyone counted out because he couldn't walk until he was seven, yet he went on to become one of the greatest kings in African history. The book weaves together action, a little bit of sorcery, and the kind of fierce loyalty between friends that makes you root for Sunjata the whole way through. It's rooted in an actual oral tradition from Mali, so readers get a solid taste of a rich cultural heritage while following a story that's been passed down for centuries. Parents will appreciate that it's both educational and exciting without being preachy, and it's short enough that even reluctant readers can finish it in a couple of sittings. Fans of "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" or anyone who loves origin stories about people beating the odds will likely gravitate toward this one.
