Description

One frosty morning, Frog wakes to find his pond frozen and snow covering the ground, leaving him puzzled by the sudden change. Too chilly to join Duck as she skates on the ice or to play snow-ball games with Hare, Frog feels left out of the season's fun. The forest friends band together, giving Frog warm gear and teaching him how to enjoy winter activities, and they all celebrate when spring finally arrives.

Quick Summary

Max Velthuijs gives us a sweet little story about Frog waking up to find that winter has suddenly arrived, and everything in his world looks strange and unfamiliar. This is the kind of picture book that works beautifully for kids just starting to read on their own the words are simple and manageable, but there's a real emotional heart to it that goes beyond just sounding out words. Frog gets scared and confused by this big change, which makes him a really relatable character for younger kids who sometimes feel overwhelmed by new situations too. It's gentle and touching without being saccharine, and the ending brings a quiet moment of comfort that feels earned. Kids who enjoy animal characters and gentle adventures will get a lot out of this one, and it's short enough that reluctant readers won't feel intimidated. If your child likes Frog, they'd probably enjoy other books in Velthuijs's Frog series too.
