Description

Life isn't fair for Benjy. His dad is marrying Benjy's school teacher, and with her comes a new stepsister and her dog. When the dog dies in an accident and everyone blames Benjy, things get worse but the ghostly mutt won't leave him alone. This middle-grade story blends family drama with a touch of the supernatural as Benjy navigates his complicated new life while dealing with an unwanted haunted companion.

Quick Summary

If you're looking for a book that balances laughs with just enough spooky fun, this one's got it all. Benjy ends up in the classic awkward spot of his dad marrying his own teacher, and just when he thinks things can't get weirder, his new stepsister's dog dies and becomes his ghostly companion which is actually kind of sweet once you get past the initial weirdness. Kids who enjoy stories about adjusting to stepfamilies or who like their ghost stories on the lighter side will find plenty to love here, and the humor keeps things from getting too heavy even when Benjy's dealing with some real emotional stuff. There's actually a lot of heart underneath the spooky premise, dealing with themes of acceptance, family dynamics, and learning to embrace situations you didn't ask for. Parents will appreciate that while there's a ghost, it's a friendly (if slightly mischievous) dog spirit, so it's spooky-fun rather than genuinely scary perfect for middle graders who want a thrill without nightmares. If your kid enjoyed books like "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" or other Judy Blume titles that mix family humor with real kid problems, they'll likely connect with Benjy's voice and his relatable struggles. The writing is accessible without talking down to readers, making it a great choice for both confident readers and those who might be a little hesitant to pick up a longer chapter book.
