Description

Jack, a boy from the twenty-first century, has already tangled with giants and a warlock, but he's still stuck in the faerie realm of Liofwende and desperate to return home. When the eccentric Spiggot recruits him for a dangerous quest to stop the Thrum underworld faerie folk who are ravaging the kingdom's enchanted forests Jack hopes the King of Northumberland will grant him safe passage back to his own time. The mission is fraught with peril, and failure means confronting the evil wizard Mallmoc, whose power could trap Jack in the faerie world forever. This is the second book in the Knights of Liofwende series.

Quick Summary

"Mallmoc's Castle" picks up with Jack still stranded in a magical realm where ancient knights clash and ancient magic crackles through the air. The story has that perfect mix of pulse-pounding adventure and genuine heart - Jack isn't just fighting to get home, he's forming real bonds with the people he meets along the way. Kids who love epic fantasy worlds full of danger and wonder will devour this, especially those who liked series like Septimus Heap or the early Redwall books. There's some genuinely tense moments (the war-torn setting means real stakes), but Kilworth balances that with humor and warmth so it never gets too dark for the age group. What really sticks with readers is how Jack grows throughout the journey - he's not just surviving anymore, he's becoming part of something bigger than himself. This being the second book in the Knights of Liofwende series means there's more world to explore, and kids often end up wanting to go back and read the first one. Parents can feel good about this one too - it's about courage, friendship, and finding your way home, with enough action to keep even reluctant readers turning pages.
