Description

In a remote corner of Kunar Province, Lieutenant Jamal Jenkins' helicopter goes down, leaving him isolated from his pararescue team, who are trapped under enemy fire at the forward base. Stranded in a hostile landscape, Jenkins must navigate treacherous terrain and mounting danger to rejoin his squad before the situation turns fatal. The story blends wartime tension with the grit of a young soldier fighting to survive and save his comrades.

Quick Summary

If you have a kid who devours action-packed stories and finishes books in one sitting, this one's for them. The story follows a pararescue soldier stranded behind enemy lines after his helicopter goes down, and the tension really builds as he tries to reach his team while they're under fire. At under 12,000 words, it's short enough to hook even the most reluctant readers, and Spradlin keeps the pace moving so fast that kids barely notice they're reading. There's real heart here too the soldier's determination and quick thinking make him an easy character to root for, and there's enough military realism to feel authentic without being too heavy for this age group. Parents can expect some war-themed content, but it's handled at a middle-grade level with more focus on problem-solving and bravery than graphic violence. This would be a great next read for fans of Gordon Korman or Mike Lupica's sports books, but swap the basketball court for an Afghanistan mountainside.
