Description

Ayla loves climbing, but she prefers the safety of indoor walls with harnesses and soft mats. When her daring best friend Lissy invites her on a weekend climbing trip up Black Dog Mountain, Ayla reluctantly tags along only to see Lissy and her father seriously injured high on the mountain. Now Ayla must confront her fears and guide everyone down the cliff to safety. The story is a middle-grade adventure that explores courage, friendship, and the thin line between thrill-seeking and recklessness.

Quick Summary

If you've got a kid who loves outdoor adventures or has ever wondered what it would be like to climb a mountain, "Deadpoint" is a great pick. Ayla finds herself in a terrifying situation when the guide gets hurt during a climb, and suddenly she has to figure out how to get everyone safely down the mountain this isn't a casual hike, it's her first time facing real danger and serious responsibility. This story hits that sweet spot for middle graders who enjoy survival and adventure stories, with enough tension to keep them turning pages but nothing too intense for younger readers. Kids who like "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen or other wilderness survival stories will probably really connect with this one, and it's a quick but satisfying adventure that gives readers a genuine sense of what climbing feels like while delivering a real story about courage. Tate does a nice job of showing how Ayla works through her fear rather than just magically becoming brave, which makes it a solid choice for kids who might not be into more fantasy-heavy reads.
