Description

After his father's enlistment forces him to release his beloved fox, Pax, into the wild, twelve-year-old Peter embarks on a solo trek across hundreds of miles of forest to bring his best friend home. The story shifts between Peter's perilous journey and Pax's struggle to survive on his own, each facing danger and unexpected encounters. As their paths converge, the novel explores the deep bond between a boy and his animal companion and the sacrifices required to protect those you love.

Quick Summary

I picked this up because the premise a boy forced to give up his pet fox and then going on a journey to find him hooked me right away. The story alternates between Peter's journey through a war-torn landscape and Pax's experiences surviving on his own, which gives you both sides of their search for each other. It's one of those books that will make you ugly cry, honestly, because the bond between Peter and Pax feels completely real. Fans of "The One and Only Ivan" or "Where the Red Fern Grows" will find that same emotional punch here. There is some graphic violence in this one, so I'd say it's better suited for older middle graders maybe 5th grade and up rather than sensitive younger readers who might get spooked. The writing is simple enough that reluctant readers can follow it easily, but the story itself has real depth, making it work for both kids who just want a good animal story and those who appreciate something more thoughtful. If you're looking for a book that will make your kid actually feel something and maybe think twice about what loyalty really means, Pax is a solid choice.
