The story centers on Finn, an 18-year-old outsider who is the only witness to the abduction of Roza, a popular young woman in the town. Finn knows Roza was taken by a dangerous man whose face he cannot recall, and he struggles to convince the townspeople of the truth while Roza is held captive. The novel, a National Book Award finalist and Printz Award winner, blends realistic drama with elements of magical realism.

Quick Summary

In a small town where people routinely vanish without a trace, the real mystery isn't just who took the missing girl, but why everyone pretends not to notice when someone disappears, and the only person who saw anything is the boy everyone already thinks is strange. Kids will root for the outsider protagonist as he navigates rumors, ridicule, and his own complicated family history while trying to prove what he witnessed in the cornfields. If your kid likes books that mix small-town secrets with a dash of magical realism, they'll devour this. Best for teens in grades 10 through 12 who enjoy mysteries with emotional depth and unusual twists.
