Description

Alex is less than thrilled when his parents leave him at Happy Hills Retirement Community while they jet off on a trip. He sends frantic emails begging to be rescued, but as the week unfolds he finds himself drawn into ice-cream before dinner and stickball games with Grandpa. Soon his complaints turn into stories about the fun he's having, and he discovers that grandparents can be surprisingly cool. The book follows Alex's change of heart through his own lively correspondence.

Quick Summary

The letter format makes this book feel really different from most chapter books for this age Alex writes directly to his parents, and kids seem to love seeing the story unfold through his complaints that turn into genuine fun. It's perfect for early readers who might be nervous about staying with grandparents or relatives, because Alex starts out scared and grumpy but gradually discovers that retirement communities can actually be pretty cool places. The humor comes through naturally in Alex's dramatic complaints, and there's a sweet message underneath without being preachy. At just around 900 words with a 3.3 reading level, it's short enough for newer readers to feel accomplished finishing it, but still has enough story to satisfy kids who read a lot. If your kid liked "My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother" or other books about adjusting to family situations, they'd probably pick this up and enjoy it. Parents will appreciate that it's lighthearted but still touches on real worries kids have about being away from home.
