Description

Fifth-grader PJ "Clueless" McGee is convinced he deserves a trophy for his Ninja Warz video-game skills, so he enters the school science fair with a magnetic pickle to win one. When the science-fair trophy disappears, Clueless finds himself accused and turns to his private-investigator father for help, writing letters that mix school life with detective work. He soon discovers the theft is tied to a prank involving a pair of inflatable pants, and he must track down the real culprit to clear his name.

Quick Summary

If your kid enjoys silly mysteries with a genuinely funny voice, PJ McGee is a character worth meeting. The whole story unfolds through letters PJ writes to his dad, who's a real private investigator, which gives it a fun confessional tone as he stumbles his way through trying to clear his name after someone accuses him of stealing the science fair trophy. It's short enough to keep momentum going, and Jeff Mack nails that blend of goofy humor and real heart that makes kids actually want to keep reading. Fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid or the Timmy Failure series will likely find a lot to love here same vibe of an unreliable but lovable narrator trying to piece things together while getting himself into increasingly ridiculous situations. The mystery is straightforward enough for younger middle graders, but the humor and voice make it work for older readers too, and there's something sweet about PJ's determination to prove himself to his dad.
