Description
In this dystopian tale, teenage Claire one of the few Birthmothers in a meticulously ordered community has formed an unexpected bond with the infant she carries. When the baby is taken from her and sent away, Claire leaves the safety of her world to track him down, facing harsh landscapes and the harsh rules of her society. Her quest forces her to confront both the limits of her community and the deep love she feels for her child. This is the fourth book in Lois Lowry's Giver series.
Quick Summary
If you loved The Giver, this final book in the series is a game-changer instead of Jonas, we follow Claire, a Birthmother who does something unheard of in her community by actually bonding with the baby she's supposed to give away. The story follows her desperate journey to find her son years later, and it's got this raw, emotional pull that makes you root for her the whole way through. It's a bit heavier and more mature than the earlier books, with some content that's better suited for older middle graders (parents might want to preview if their kid is on the younger side of the recommended age), but the payoff is worth it for readers who enjoy thinking about big questions like what makes a family and what we're willing to sacrifice. This one especially resonates with kids who like stories with strong female protagonists and happy-to-sad-to-happy-again arcs. If you haven't read the other Giver books but want something thoughtful and a little dystopian, it works fine on its own too, though you'll catch more references having the context.
