Description

In Heat Wave, a middle-grade summer sports story, Grace is thrust into the spotlight when the star swimmer breaks her leg just before a big meet. While she battles her fear of letting the team down, her friend Christina is obsessed with catching the attention of Mike, the boy she likes, and uses Grace's practice sessions as a chance to get close to him. As the meet approaches, Grace must decide whether to trust her training and herself, even as summer heat and teenage drama heat up.

Quick Summary

If you've got a kid who loves swimming or just stories about middle school friendship drama, this one's a solid pick. Grace is terrified of letting her team down when she has to step up as a swimmer, and her insecurity feels super real you'll find yourself rooting for her the whole way. Meanwhile, her friend Christina is going through hilariously over-the-top attempts to get a boy to notice her, which adds some comic relief and totally captures that age when crushes feel like the biggest deal in the world. It's got that nice mix of funny moments and genuinely sweet, heartfelt stuff that makes you care about the characters. Kids who enjoy books about navigating friendships, dealing with pressure, or just want something light but meaningful will probably eat this up. It reminds me a lot of the way books by authors like Lauren Myracle handle that middle school mix of humor and heart. Parents will appreciate that it's age-appropriate without feeling preachy it's just a fun, quick read about real kid stuff.
