Quick Summary
Bansch's "I Want a Dog!" follows a plucky little girl who, unable to have a real pet, decides to conjure up a dog from her imagination turning a cardboard box into a kennel, a sock into a puppy, and a stick into a leash. The bright, cartoon-style illustrations are full of goofy details that make kids giggle, and the simple, rhythmic text lets new readers feel confident turning the pages. It's a great match for animal-obsessed kids in kindergarten through third grade, especially those who love make-believe and enjoy books that encourage creative play. Parents will be happy to know it's a wholesome, upbeat story with no scary bits just a lot of heart and humor about dreaming big. If your child enjoys imaginative stories about pets, they might also like "Dog's Colorful Day" by Emma Dodd, which has the same playful spirit and easy-to-read format.
