Description

When the composer is discovered dead in the symphony hall, an inspector arrives to investigate the murder. He questions each instrument violins, cellos, the trumpet, the harp, and more about their whereabouts and alibis on the night of the crime. As the clues mount, the inspector must sort through the testimonies to find the true culprit. Young readers can follow the clues and try to solve the mystery themselves.

Quick Summary

From the moment the orchestra's most famous composer drops dead on the stage, Inspector Dulcimer starts questioning each instrument in a playful game of "who done it?" that feels like a kid-friendly version of Clue. Lemony Snicket's trademark wit and rhythmic, rhyming text keep the mystery light-hearted, and children will love trying to guess which instrument had the motive while learning the names of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion along the way. The story is short enough for a single read-aloud but packed with enough humor and subtle spookiness to make kids want to hear it again and again, and parents will appreciate that the scares stay gentle and the tone stays fun. It's a great pick for kids who enjoy a mix of humor, mystery, and a dash of music, especially if they've already enjoyed the quirky storytelling of "The Stinky Cheese Man" or similar read-alouds.
