Description

When her parents are away, Alvina is looked after by her two grandmothers one English, the other from Trinidad. As the two women share very different customs and expectations, their contrasting views begin to clash, creating tension in the household. Alvina steps in to help them understand each other's traditions and find common ground. The story follows her effort to bridge the cultural divide and keep the family harmony intact.

Quick Summary

Alvina's parents go away and she ends up with two grandmothers her English gran and Granny Vero from Trinidad who both want to take care of her in their own ways, and the clash of cooking styles, accents, and bedtime routines makes for some genuinely funny moments. Kids who enjoy stories about families with mixed cultures or who like a bit of gentle humor will find plenty to love here, and the short length (just under 1,200 words) makes it a great pick for reluctant readers who might otherwise give up on a longer chapter book. The story is warm without being saccharine, and there's a subtle lesson about listening and compromise that feels earned rather than preachy, so parents can feel good about the take-away. What really sticks with you is the way Alvina steps up as a little mediator, figuring out how to make both grannies happy while also respecting their differences, and the ending brings a sweet sense of unity that kids can aspire to. If your child liked All Are Welcome or The Family Book, they'd probably enjoy this too, especially if they're into stories about grandparents and cultural celebrations.
