To confront the threat, Genna and Dan strike a risky pact with the Nightling lord, risking everything in a bid to protect their world.

Quick Summary

If your kid loves fantasy worlds where things are a little bit dark and spooky, "The Ruby Key" is a great pick. Genna and her younger brother Dash make an awesome sibling team fourteen-year-old Genna is the more responsible one trying to protect her brother, while Dash brings some humor and heart to their adventures in a world where humans share an uneasy peace with creatures called Nightlings. The story has real stakes and some genuinely creepy moments (Nightlings aren't exactly friendly), but it's also got that satisfying feeling of kids outsmarting the adults and making their own deals to save the day. I'd say this one's perfect for readers who enjoyed "Gregor the Overlander" or anything with brave siblings navigating magical dangers together. Parents should know there's some spooky stuff and the uncle character is genuinely villainous, but it's not overly dark just exciting enough to keep those middle-grade readers turning pages.
