Description

In the early 1700s, young Om-kas-toe yearns to prove himself as a brave among the Blackfeet people, who depend on hunting buffalo to survive on the northern plains. While serving as lookouts with his twin sister, the children spot something extraordinary a creature they've never seen before. The strange animal is a horse, and the siblings' discovery will change life for their tribe forever.

Quick Summary

If you've got a kid who's curious about Native American history or just loves a good adventure story, this one's a fantastic pick. The story follows Blackfeet twins in the early 1700s who stumble upon something completely new to their world and the way they figure out what to do with this discovery drives the whole adventure forward. It feels grounded in real history (those early 1700s were a wild time for Plains tribes with horses becoming part of their lives), but it's got that sense of wonder and problem-solving that makes history feel alive rather than like a textbook. The twins' relationship feels genuine, and there's enough action and "what happens next" energy to keep pages turning, which makes it a solid choice for reluctant readers who need something that doesn't feel like homework. Parents will appreciate that it introduces real aspects of Blackfeet culture and the huge changes happening during this period, but in a way that never feels preachy. If your kid liked books like "The Birchbark House" or other Native American historical fiction, this hits a similar vibe but moves at a quicker pace, making it great for kids who want an adventure first and don't necessarily consider themselves "history kids."
